His out of body experiences started spontaneously in the 50's, scared and confused at first, he thought he was possibly loosing the plot. Their cars are much larger, even the smallest having a single bench seat that will hold 5-6 people abreast. His description of the way out of body experiences began occurring to him, his initial reactions and perceptions etc. He tries to take a scientific approach but the only scientific experiment done in the book is a failure. One of these similarities was the sense of floating away from the physical body and witnessing events going on around and near their corpse.In 1994 his third book, "Ultimate Journey" was released, exploring basic truths about the meaning and purpose of life and what lies beyond the limits of our physical world.

After being assured by his physician that he was in perfect health and not suffering from a brain tumor, he went to see a psychiatrist, because surely he must be losing his mind. For the curious, this is the book to get the best description of what people are talking about when they talk about OBE (Out of Body) or NDE (Near Death Experiences. One thing that has stumped me since finishing the book which hopefully will be answered in the second two in the series is, why did this not catch and take off as Monroe laid out a very definitive course of study?Much of this can probably be attributed to his background and upbringing which makes it even more believable as he was a middle class, average joe persona.

As Robert Monroe met many other people who have had similar experiences and read the literature of the East that documents the long history of this phenomenon, his fears were alleviated. Suppose this person claims that on the previous night he had an experience of flying through the air over a large city which he soon recognized as New York.

In spite of the lack of “hard” scientific data, there are still a number of definite conclusions one can make from reading what material there is. Lederman, professor of physics at Columbia University, has stated: “Basic physics is completely consistent with the cosmological conception of a literal antiworld of stars and planets composed of atoms of antimatter, which is to say negative nuclei surrounded by positive electrons. After several tries, he managed to come up with some techniques and made the event more "controllable". The experiencer seems to possess his normal consciousness at the time, and even though he may reason that this cannot be happening, he will feel all his normal critical faculties to be present, and so knows he is not dreaming. There are some important exceptions to this general put-down of dreams, but for the vast majority of people in our society today, dreams are not things that serious people concern themselves with. Further, he tells us that not only was this “dream” “intensely vivid, but that he knew at the time that it was not a dream, that he was really in the air over New York City.

In many cases, it simply happens during sleep without our having any idea of what might have caused it. He made sure to even include journeys that didn't make sense at the moment, assuming their interpretation might be easier later on.
